Longing for God: A True Hunger for Righteousness

In a world filled with spiritual noise and religious activity, there's something profound missing in many churches today: a genuine, deep longing for God himself. While we hear reports of revival and see crowds gathering, the question remains - are we truly hungering and thirsting for God, or are we simply seeking experiences, emotions, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves?

What Does It Mean to Truly Hunger for God?

The psalmist captures this beautifully in Psalm 42:1: "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God." This isn't casual interest or Sunday morning religion - this is a desperate, consuming desire for the living God.

Jesus opened His greatest sermon, the Sermon on the Mount, with these words: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6). He later emphasized in the same sermon, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).

This seeking God must be our life's priority - not just a compartment of our lives, but the driving force behind everything we do.

Why Is There Only One Way to God?

In our culture of tolerance and ecumenicalism, it's unpopular to claim exclusivity. However, Jesus was clear: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).

This isn't about being narrow-minded or unloving. It's about truth. Either Jesus is who He claimed to be, or He isn't. He rose from the dead to prove His claims. There aren't many paths to heaven - there's one straight and narrow path, and Jesus is that path.

Understanding Key Biblical Terms

To properly long for God, we must understand what we're pursuing:

Righteousness

Righteousness means right standing with God. We cannot achieve this on our own - it comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, who imputes His righteousness to us. This is what secures our salvation.

Godliness

While righteousness establishes our standing before God, godliness guides how we walk daily. It teaches us to live according to biblical principles. Righteousness is who you are in Christ; godliness is how Christ lives through you.

Holiness

Holiness means to be set apart for God - dedicated to Him and separated from common use. As believers, we're in this world but not of this world. Holiness involves putting off the old nature, while godliness involves putting on the new nature.

Three Critical Questions for Self-Examination

Are You Hungry and Thirsty for God?

Think about the last time you were truly hungry - when all you could think about was food. Now imagine having that same intensity of desire for God. This is what Jesus described in Matthew 5:6 - a ravenous craving for righteousness.

When you wake up in the morning, is your first thought about getting into God's Word? Do you long for that time with Him? This kind of hunger transforms your entire day and perspective.

Are You Eating Spiritual Junk Food?

Just as eating junk food between meals ruins your appetite for nutritious dinner, filling your mind with spiritual junk food destroys your appetite for God and His Word.

Consider how much time you spend on:

  • Television and entertainment
  • Social media
  • Video games
  • Other activities that don't build you up spiritually

The question isn't whether these activities are necessarily sinful, but whether they're helping or hurting your spiritual growth. As G. Campbell Morgan said, "Anything that dims the vision of the ultimate, that kills the passion in our lives, is a waste."

Are You Surrounding Yourself with Godly People?

"Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good character'" (1 Corinthians 15:33). The people you spend time with will either draw you closer to God or pull you away from Him.

Paul instructed Timothy to "flee youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:22). This pursuit requires surrounding yourself with others who share your hunger for God.

The Power of Godly Community

One key to developing deep hunger for God is finding others who share that pursuit. When you spend time with people who:

  • Love to share their faith
  • Enjoy discussing theology and God's Word
  • Pray together regularly
  • Read and share godly books
  • Are sold out for Jesus

Something powerful happens. Iron sharpens iron. Their passion becomes contagious, and you find yourself growing in ways you never imagined.

Breaking Free from Worldly Patterns

True pursuit of God requires leaving behind old patterns and influences that hinder spiritual growth. This might mean:

  • Changing your entertainment choices
  • Deleting toxic influences from social media
  • Distancing yourself from people who drag you down spiritually
  • Replacing worldly input with God's Word and godly content

Remember, you'll stand before Christ one day to give an account of your walk with God. The influences you allow in your life today will shape who you become.

Life Application

This week, honestly evaluate your spiritual appetite. Are you truly longing for God with the intensity of a deer panting for water? Challenge yourself to:

  1. Start each day in God's Word - Not just a quick verse, but genuine study and meditation
  2. Eliminate one source of spiritual junk food - Whether it's excessive entertainment, social media, or other distractions
  3. Intentionally spend time with someone who loves God deeply - Let their passion influence yours

Ask yourself these questions:

  • When I wake up, what am I most excited about - God's Word or something else?
  • What activities am I allowing to steal my appetite for spiritual things?
  • Are the people closest to me drawing me toward God or away from Him?
  • If someone observed my life for a week, would they say I'm hungry for God?

The Westminster Catechism reminds us that our chief end is "to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." This isn't just theology - it's meant to be the passionate pursuit of every believer's heart. Don't settle for religious activity when God is calling you to genuine intimacy with Him.
