Pentecost Sunday marks far more than just the birthday of the church. It represents the birth of the power of the body of Christ to carry out its divine mission - the Great Commission given specifically by Jesus Christ to tell the world about Him.
After His resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days with His disciples, teaching them and opening their understanding of Scripture. In Luke 24:44-49, He gave them clear instructions about what they were to preach:
"'Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.'" - Luke 24:46-47
This is the outline Jesus gave for preaching. Not psychological feel-good messages or motivational speeches, but the Gospel: Christ suffered for our sins, died, and rose again on the third day. This is what we're called to preach if we want to see revival and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told His followers: "'Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.'" - Luke 24:49
The disciples needed to wait for supernatural empowerment before they could fulfill their mission.
"'And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.'" - Acts 2:1-4
This was more than just something that happened in a few hours. This was a phenomenal act of recreation - something no one in the world had ever seen before.
People from every nation heard the Gospel in their own languages and dialects. These Galilean disciples were speaking languages they had never learned, proclaiming the wonderful works of God to people from Parthia, Media, Egypt, Rome, and many other regions.
Even though Jesus rose from the dead, without the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, His resurrection would have remained a footnote in history. The disciples needed to be empowered by the Spirit to tell the world what happened.
Pentecost marked the birth of the new Israel - the Church of Jesus Christ. This was the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy and Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones. A mighty army, full of the Spirit of God from every tribe, tongue, and nation was born.
"'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy...'" - Acts 2:17
If you've received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, if you've been born again, you are part of this great, mighty, and powerful army - the new Israel, the chosen people of God.
The same Spirit that created the world and raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. You have power over:
"'But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.'" - Acts 1:8
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is primarily for witnessing - having the boldness to tell people about Jesus. A witness simply tells what they have seen and heard.
We need to get back to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ from Genesis to Revelation. Not feel-good messages or motivational speeches, but the Word of God that has power to save souls.
You don't have to walk around in depression or defeat. Remind yourself daily: "I am a Spirit-filled child of God." You have been recreated and given abundant life, joy unspeakable, and peace that passes understanding.
The Great Commission isn't just for pastors, evangelists, or missionaries. It's for every Christian. You have been given not just the responsibility, but the privilege to share what has been given to you.
This week, embrace your identity as a Spirit-filled child of God. Start each morning by declaring: "I am a Spirit-filled child of God with power over sin, the world, and Satan." Then look for opportunities to be a witness - invite someone to church, share your testimony, or simply tell someone what Jesus has done in your life.
Ask yourself these questions:
Remember, the greatest miracle that will ever take place is when someone who is lost and dead in their sins is changed by the power of God and raised to spiritual life. You have been empowered by the same Spirit that created the world to be part of that miracle in someone else's life.
