Redeeming the Time in Light of the Final Judgment

God has fixed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness. This day is fast approaching—a final judgment where God will hold court and all the world will stand trial before Him. In this final judgment, God will open the books, present His case, and every person will be judged. He will announce His just verdict, condemning every unbeliever to hell while welcoming every name recorded in the Book of Life.

This final courtroom scene is described in Revelation 20:11-15. It represents the highest court in heaven and earth—the Supreme Court of the universe with no higher court of appeal. Every single person will be individually summoned to take their stand before the divine judgment bar.

The evidence presented will be irrefutable. There will be no rebuttal offered, no defense rendered, no sympathy extended, no grace, no advocate to defend the sinner, and no miscarriage of justice. There will be no successful appeal by the guilty, no parole from prison, no purgatory with hope of escape—only perfect judgment.

The only hope is if your name is written in the Book of Life.

What Does the Bible Say About the Final Judgment Throne?

The throne in heaven is revealed as a great white throne. This is no imaginary scene but a very real day that is unalterably fixed on God's prophetic calendar. Mankind is moving irreversibly toward this final day.

The judgment seat is described with three significant words:

  1. Great - It towers above every other throne in the universe. It possesses jurisdiction over the entire created order and overrides every decision of any lower court. Its summons is irreversible, and its verdicts are final.

  2. White - This indicates a court of absolute purity, absolute holiness, and inflexible justice. There will be no injustice, no partiality shown. Every sin will be entered into this courtroom as condemning evidence.

  3. Throne - This indicates the judge's tribunal, a seat of judgment where every sin will be presented and judgment rendered.

Who Will Be the Judge at the Final Judgment?

The one who sits on the throne of judgment is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Scripture identifies this judge clearly:

  • Jesus said in John 5:22, "For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son."
  • Peter announced in Acts 10:39 that Jesus "is the one appointed by God to judge the living and the dead."
  • Paul declares in Romans 2:16 that "on that day when, according to my Gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus."

On this day, the Lamb of God shall become the Lion. The Lion of the tribe of Judah will rightfully capture and judge every single person whose name is not written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Who Will Be Summoned to the Final Judgment?

When the trumpet sounds, everyone throughout history will be summoned to appear before Christ. The judge possesses all authority and power to summon every person who has ever lived.

Revelation 20:12 says, "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne." The multitude will include:

  1. The "great" - Those who lived with great influence over others (rulers, leaders, people of power)
  2. The "small" - Unknown individuals who lived lives of obscurity with little visibility or influence

What Groups of People Will Stand Before the Judgment Throne?

A wide host of people will be present at the final judgment:

  1. The out-and-out sinners - Those who have sinned violently against God, broken His law, blasphemed God, despised the Church, hated the Bible, and mocked morality.

  2. The self-righteous - Those who prided themselves in their own goodness and morality, believing they were good enough to commend themselves to God without Christ.

  3. Cult members - Followers of false religions and false teachers who have followed paths other than the one true way of salvation through Jesus Christ.

  4. Procrastinators - Those who knew they were sinners and that Jesus Christ is the Savior, but kept putting off their decision to follow Him.

  5. Lost church members - Those who grew up in church, were baptized, married in church, but either fell away from faith or were never truly born again. They professed Christ but never possessed Christ.

What Happens to Our Bodies at the Final Judgment?

Every person, believer and unbeliever alike, will be raised from the dead and brought before Jesus Christ. Revelation 20:13 says, "And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them."

On the last day, decayed corpses will be raised up and reunited with their souls to face their official day in court. Jesus said in John 5:28-29, "Do not marvel at this, for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice and come forth—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil unto the resurrection of condemnation."

What Evidence Will Be Presented at the Final Judgment?

In this divine judgment, the sins of those without Christ will be disclosed. "The books were opened" (Revelation 20:12). These books contain the precise, meticulously kept records of every person in history.

The omniscient God has recorded every sinful thought, every idle word, every lawless deed. Every selfish act, every sensual thought, every carnal comment has been entered into the heavenly register. This record will show:

  • Sins of omission - what each person should have done but failed to do
  • Sins of commission - what each person should not have done but did do

Even sins long forgotten will be brought out into the open. As Ecclesiastes 12:14 says, "For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil."

Jesus reinforced this truth when He said, "I tell you, on the day of judgment, people will give an account for every careless word they speak" (Matthew 12:36).

Why Must God Punish Sin at the Final Judgment?

Justice demands punishment. The Bible plainly states in Ezekiel 18:20, "The soul who sins will die," and in Romans 6:23, "The wages of sin is death."

Every sin in the history of the world will be judged by Jesus Christ. No sin will be overlooked. Every transgression will be punished either:

  1. In Christ at the cross (for those who have accepted His sacrifice), or
  2. By Christ in hell (for those who have rejected Him)

But it will receive its just recompense. There will be no second chances after death, no reversal of the divine verdict.

What Is the Book of Life and Why Is It Important?

After looking at all the books containing each person's deeds, Jesus Christ will open another book—the Book of Life. In this sacred book are recorded the names of every genuine born-again believer in Jesus Christ.

After the Book of Life is opened, unbelievers will find out that their names are not written in it. Throughout their lives, they never cast themselves on the mercy of Christ in repentance and faith. Instead, they chose to go their own way.

Only those whose sins have been covered by Christ's blood will be written in the Book of Life.

How Will the Final Judgment Be Executed?

Salvation is by mercy and grace, but judgment is by works. If you do not receive and trust in the One who did the work for you (Jesus Christ), then you will be judged by your own works—and you will fall short.

Each sinner will be strictly judged according to what they did. Inflexible justice will be executed with not one drop of mercy on that day. Those who had greater exposure to the truth of God will be held to an even stricter judgment.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:21-24 that it would be "more tolerable" for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for cities that witnessed His miracles yet did not repent.

What Is the Final Verdict for Those Not in the Book of Life?

After examining the evidence and documenting the guilt of every lost sinner, the sovereign judge will render His verdict. Revelation 20:14-15 says, "Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire."

This lake of fire represents eternal torment. Hebrews 10:27 speaks of "a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries," and Revelation 14:10 says the condemned "will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb."

Throughout all eternity, those cast into this lake of fire will never know one moment of release. There will be no escape from eternal punishment.

Life Application

In light of this sobering truth about the final judgment, we must examine ourselves and ask:

  1. Is my name written in the Book of Life? Have I truly given my life to Christ?

  2. Am I redeeming the time—making the most of every opportunity God has given me?

  3. Am I living in a way that reflects my belief in this coming judgment?

  4. Am I sharing the gospel with others, knowing the terror of the Lord that awaits those who reject Him?

The challenge for this week is to live with eternity in view. Make decisions based not just on what feels good now, but on what will matter in light of the final judgment. Examine your heart honestly before God, and if you've never truly surrendered your life to Christ, do so today.

Remember, this is not about religion but about a relationship with Jesus Christ so that your name is written in the Book of Life. As 2 Corinthians 6:2 urges, "Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation." Don't put it off—your eternity depends on it.
